Excessive watering, despite not causing direct damage to our eyes, can become inconvenient, interfere with vision or cause irritation of the surrounding eyelid skin. In some cases it can get in the way of our social or professional relationships, and in those instances it may affect us psychologically.
Frequently, the cause of watery eyes is multifactorial which means there can be a number of elements causing or worsening it. Those include, disease of the ocular surface, impaired drainage by an abnormally narrow or totally blocked tear duct and eyelid malposition. Each one of these causes needs to be addressed differently, medically and/or surgically.
